REVIEW ➞ The Lies We Steal by Monty Jay

BLURB ➞

It’s been months since the day we stood above that empty grave that stunk of burnt flesh and secrets. All of us were dressed to the nines, one of us wearing a wedding dress, a day that was supposed to mark the beginning of a new adventure.
It marked the bitter end of our vengeance.
We have done things that have marked our souls for eternity.
But before we get there, we have to go back.
Back to where it all started.
The place I could find in my sleep.
Hollow Heights University in the macabre, somber seaside town of Ponderosa Springs.
A college for prestigious, wealthy children to receive the highest education. A town drowning in treachery and secrets that became our damnation.
But it wasn’t the forest surrounding the grounds or even the mysterious hidden mausoleum that haunted me.
It was them.
The ones that lurked in the night, things so wicked, so twisted, so evil, they would become the rulers of my nightmares.
The Hollow Boys.
One wrong move and I landed myself directly in their line of fire.
This is not a story about love, it is not a story of happy endings.
Love just happened to blossom in our sorrows, in our pain, our fear, our blood.
Every terrible thing they ever did, we watched, we helped, we loved them anyway.
Some run from their monsters, we fell in love with ours.

My little red riding hood running from the big bad wolf.  Our story is inevitable.  I catch her.  I feast.

ARC REVIEW ➞

I don’t even know where to start with this review. This story completely sucked me in. It took me on a dark and twist journey that I couldn’t get enough of.

Alistair is dark, he is twisted, he is a force, he is fiercely loyal to his three best friends. There is more to him than what meets the eye and he is a complex character. He draws you in and captivates you. Briar is a BA. She doesn’t come from money or the perfect life. She isn’t a weak character. I love that she fights back, she doesn’t just lay down and take the hatred that Alistair is spewing towards her. She dishes it back. She is also drawn to the darkness, specifically his darkness.

The chemistry between them is insane and intense. The back and forth. The tension. The delicious slow burn of their relationship. It’s completely addicting. The darkness and  the suspense in this story is intense but captivating.

While this is Alistair and Briar’s story, there is plenty of the rest of the Hollow Boys. Rook, Thatcher, and Silas. Each of them are different from one another, but they have a common goal and they are all fiercely loyal to one another. I can’t wait to get to know more about the rest of the boys. I also loved Lyra, who quickly become Briar’s best friend and someone she could confide in and trust. I definitely hope there is plenty more of her in the future books, too.

This book is dark and there are things literally from page one that may be difficult for some people to read, so proceed with caution.

If you’re looking for a dark, enemies to lovers, romantic suspense story this is one to check out.
